Every piece of furniture we make starts with a material decision. Get that wrong and nothing else matters, not the joinery, not the finish, not the ten-year warranty we stand behind. So we don’t.

New Zealand Pine

Sustainably sourced from certified New Zealand forests, this is the timber in almost everything we make indoors: the Frankie Bunk, the Gus Storage Bed, the April Dining Table, the shelving. It’s plantation-grown, which often raises eyebrows. It shouldn’t.

Properly dried and milled, NZ Pine is dense, stable, and takes paint or stain exceptionally well. It’s the reason our whites stay white and our natural finishes age well rather than badly. The forests are replanted, certified, and harvested on long rotations. Every board is traceable. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

For outdoors, we use Accoya: the only timber built to actually live outside. It starts as sustainably grown radiata pine, then goes through acetylation: a process that modifies the wood at a molecular level so it can’t absorb water. The result is rot-resistant, insect-resistant, dimensionally stable, and rated to last 50 years above ground. FSC-approved. No chemical preservatives.

It also looks the part. Tight grain, clean finish. Ages to a quiet silver-grey if left natural, or holds paint with unusual longevity. Melbourne’s weather has thrown everything at it. It handles all of it.

Low-VOC Finishes

The finish matters as much as the timber, especially in a kid’s room. We use low-VOC finishes across the entire Made-to-Order range. Less off-gassing. Better air quality. It should be standard. It’s not always.
